I combined these with some de-cored Shure Olives and an iAUDIO 7, which can play the FLAC audio format. These headphones sound great–they do a great job of creating the illusion of distance and soundstage, are extremely clear and crisp on the high end, and bring out a lot of recording details (such as Fazil Say humming in the background of one of his Mozart recordings, the zing of Terence Blanchard’s trumpet in A Tale of God’s Will, and the concert hall echo in a Graham Johnson recording of Gabriel Faure). For you are essentially paying a one-time fee to experience a live concert or recording session wherever you take your mp3 player, given your mp3 player has decent sound quality (the iAUDIO 7 is probably a very good compliment to these earphones compared to, say, an iPod). There are probably better earbuds out there, but for those of us who don’t feel like spending more than on headphones, these are, based on my first impressions, a pretty nice steal. Koss’s miniature portable earphone, affectionately dubbed “The Plug,” makes use of an ear-cushion material (similar to that used in sound-blocking earplugs) that slowly expands in your ear canal to provide a custom fit and maximum sonic isolation from external noises. What I don’t see in the dozen or so reviews, I have browsed is the quick-and-dirty insertion technique. I overcome that trouble by pinching the foam and putting it my mouth, give it a quick suck, then stick it in the ear, the added lubrication makes it a breeze to get a good fit (once the squeamish get past the ewww factor).

They are the best ear bud value on the planet, their ability to isolate sound allows you to play music and podcasts very low.

I have had a recent string of bad luck with the cord shorting out at the plug, after a month of daily use and storage in my jacket pocket, one, channel will cut out intermittently then permanently, followed a day later by the other channel. I have had this problem with 2 pairs purchased from koss directly, and 1 of 3 purchased from amazon this year. I now am careful to unplug the cord from the mp3 player when i am not listening to it, and try to put it on the seat of the truck so the cord doesn’t move around much at the base. So, far, so good.

Another great reason to have these phones is that they isolate the noise from a diesel engine, if you drive a large commercial truck, and all the related clunking in the cab that comes along with that. In the cab, one has to compensate for the ambient noise by turning the radio up louder. Not smart. Make sure you watch out for cops. Not legal to do that anywhere I’ve been.

I don’t write many reviews, but have had a great experience with the Phiaton PS300 noise-cancelling headphones that I wanted to share with you.

First, I live in New York City and commute by subway every day. I also travel by plane a bit (I have family spread out up and down the East Coast). I was looking for a solid pair of noise-cancelling headphones and not looking to overpay for a name. After doing weeks of research, I decided on the Phiaton PS300s. There have been a ton of great reviews from top Audio publications (do a web search on the PS300 and you’ll see), which is what sold me on these.

Now for some specifics….

They do a great job of blocking out the rumble of the subway train and also block out the music of those next to you listening to their music too loud. I also love the fact that they include an extra battery. I always keep the extra charged and in my bag, ready to use. Another great feature of these headphones is that you can use them even if the battery is dead. Most noise-cancelling headphones CANNOT be used if the battery is dead (like the Bose). It’s very rare that I’ve had the battery die on my and not had the spare (I forgot it one or twice charging on my desk at work) and I love the fact that I can still use them to listen to music or watch a video on my iPod.

The headphones also fold up when not in use and come with a carrying case to store them in. This is great for when I’m going out after work, I just fold them up, pop them in the case and drop them in my bag.

Sound quality is great with them, especially with classic rock and hip-hop (I tend to listen to a wide variety of music). They are also extremely light-weight and feel great after being worn for an extended period of time.

I am extremely happy with my purchase of the Phiaton PS300 Noise-Cancelling Headphones.

HOW USED: primarily for flying, but also at my desk w/ my laptop. COMPARISONS: Before settling on the Bose QC-2′s, I tested (on flights) the following noise-cancelling headphones: Bose QC-3′s, Sennheiser PX-250′s, and Solitudes (LINX, ver. 3). All had good-to-excellent sound, plus individual pros & cons. CONCLUSION: which headphone is “best” depends on your tastes, physique, and priorities. PROS (vs. other models): more comfortable for long periods than on-the-ear phones; have the deepest (more comfortable) over-the-ear cups; use normal batteries–you’re not compelled to use expensive, proprietary batteries; noise-cancelling component is built-into headset (vs. awkward capsule on wire). CONS: clunky when turning head to side or trying to sleep; ears may sweat in sealed-off cups. Though not perfect, the Bose QC-2′s are the best noise-cancelling headphones on the market (for me).
