If you are looking for noise-canceling headphones for an MP3 player that deliver excellent sound reproduction at an affordable price, this product should be on your short list for consideration. I have owned noise-canceling headphones by Sony and Altec Lansing, as well as in-ear buds (which by their nature have a noise canceling effect) by Audio Technica and Etymotic Research, costing 0 and more. The earbuds were uncomfortable, difficult to insert and remove, and produced insufficient low-end sound and an uncomfortably sharp high-end. The noise-canceling headphones by Sony (MDR-NC6′s – on ear) and Altec Lansing (over the ear) failed to produce acceptable sound in my opinion. Either they suffered from overall low fidelity (Sony MDR’s), or mushy bass and poor sound separation (Altec Lansing). The Altec Lansing’s were also too large to store and use easily during air travel (I fly a lot and economy of space is a major consideration). I’ve also owned the lower end Bose (on ear) headphones, but unfortunately found that they lived up to their snarky reputation among audiophiles (artificial sounding, way over-bassed, and a poor value for the money).

So these Audio Technica Quiet Point headphones, newly released this January, have been an extremely pleasant surprise. The sound reproduction is the best I have come across for portable music players. The overall sound is natural and full, without the juiced-up quality that some headphones substitute for real fidelity and which can quickly produce “ear-fatigue.” Sound separation is excellent; bottom end sound is full and remarkably clean and sharp. The phones fit comfortably and securely, and can be worn for hours without ear-fatigue. They also reduce outside noise, whether from an airliner or a crowded coffee-shop, as well as any of the other players I’ve listened to.

These headphones are also well-designed. Whether you are a frequent air traveler or simply like to have your music player in your day pack for listening in a cafe or while shopping, the lightweight (1 pound) but sturdy construction, and a fold-up feature that makes the ‘phones easy to store and also protects them from damage, are big plusses.

These headphones can’t substitute for the fidelity of good full-size audiophile headphones for the home, but in my experience that is true with all headphones and earbuds designed for portable music players. Overall, they do a better job than any other product in this category that I have heard, and at about 0 the price can’t be beat.

Able Planet Clear Harmony Over the Head Stereo Headphones Review

As I sit at my computer listening to classical music while I type, I’m still wondering at the price of these headphones. These are far, far better than the cheap stock earbuds and headphones you’d get with most mp3 or CD players; they’re more substantial, they have a balanced and smooth, rich sound that at first seems a bit muffled (but when turned up, never distorts — even at higher volumes, sound effects, etc.), and the cord includes a volume control.

These are on-ear ‘phones and so the sound tends to be more ‘outdoors’ rather than the cup or earbud styles. In addition to being safer for your hearing, I prefer this kind of open sound — likely helped by the mesh on the cans themselves (see picture) rather than a closed design. The point of contact is foam and while I initially thought they were a bit tight (my skull is wide), they feel fine and don’t slide at all. Able Planet has struck a good balance of form and function. The cord has a removable, gold adapter to allow for the two sizes of headphones inputs and it fits snugly.

These headphones feature what Able Planet calls its “Linx Audio” technology. Basically, it reduces the main frequency we hear and increases the harmonic frequencies, thus reducing distortion, cleaning the sound by reducing unwanted noise such as boom and hiss, and being safer for the listener’s hearing. I’m not a sound engineer, but my ears tell me it appears to work as advertised. I can hear every instrument in a symphony orchestra clearly no matter the range.

Everything about these headphones speaks of a quality product, especially the sound. I have a pair of Sennheiser supra-aural headphones that are perhaps only minimally better, but cost about 4 times this price (and that was on sale). For .99, I intend to buy at least one more pair.

Very highly recommended.

Sennheiser PXC 350 Active Noise Cancellation Headphone (Black) Review

First off, let’s clear some myths about “noise canceling”, from the below reviews. No headphones, not even the Bose QC-15 will cancel out voices nor people talking. “Noise canceling” does not work on those frequencies. These headphones are designed to reduce low-frequncy “white noise” up to around 1000Hz. It does not work on people talking, noise in the gym, or other noises that are not constant. A more appropriate term for all of these headphones should be “noise reduction”.

The noise it does significantly reduce is the low frequency rumble of engine noise while in an airplane, and also fans, dishwasher noise, and air conditioner noise. I work in a large computer data center with lots of racks of servers and huge air coolers. These headphones reduce a lot of that noise to the point that I can listen to my music at low volume and hear all details of the music. There is a little bit of hiss introduced when turning the noise canceling on, but it is barely noticeable. The headphones are a good size for people with bigger heads, and they fit completely around the ear. Very comfortable for extended periods of usage.

The sound quality is good, but not the best you can get. They also have a lower sound quality while “off”. This is probably due to the fact, that when you turn the noise canceling on, this also turns on an amp too. A lot of small MP3 players like ipods/iphone will not sound good with these headphones, unless you keep the noise canceling feature on.

Update: After owning these headphones for awhile and comparing them to the Bose QC-15, these headphones are being returned and I bought a pair of Bose QC-15 instead. The noise canceling on these headphones just wasn’t good enough for every day use in my computer lab. The Bose have much better noise reduction, fit tighter for a more sealed fit, and also have better sound quality. I can hear all the details in my music with the Bose, that just sound muddy with the Sennheiser. Sennheiser seems to have dropped the ball this time around regarding sound quality.
